Week Three Blog Post

1. Continuing to consider time and space and how it is experienced by people, I want you to think about how you experience time and space differently here in Scotland than you did in London. Consider how the different environment, housing, and money situation makes you see time and space differently.

2. With that in mind consider what you know about the people from the past. How would they have experienced time and space differently from you? No electricity, no rapid form of transportation, everything including cooking was a long process, how would time and space feel different to them?

3. Following today’s discussion of “Utopias” I want you to consider the role of pain, loss, and deprivation in the creation of a human longing to make the world better. Where does most utopian thinking come from? How does the awareness of human suffering create a desire in some to try to better the world? What responses to pain (utopian or otherwise) can be seen in the present or the past?

4. How has this part of the trip effected the way you will approach your final paper subject?

Week 2 Blog Post

Consider the following Questions. Answer them in the order and format that we did before by beginning with the question and then following with the answer.

1. Now that you have been to many different places and spaces and taking into consideration what you have learned, how does space influence history? You might want to think about what “space” is and includes before you start this question. You may also want to read through the Stephen Kern reading on the site.

2. Think about how the history you have seen at Stonehenge and Bath might have effected those who lived here. You live in a relatively new country the people and poets that you are reading lived in a very old one. How might that change their way of thinking?

3. The Architecture in Bath is Georgian. That means it is the period that we studied for the first part of our course. The buildings were built at the time of the Revolutions in France and the US and up until just before the 1848 revolutions. What can you learn about the people who built the buildings of Bath by looking at how they built them? Think of the two crescents we saw (in some of the Facebook Photo’s)

4. Tell us again in a few sentences he topic of your primary research – or the primary question you are trying to answer in your paper for this course.

First Week Journal Entry

You have had your first week in the United Kingdom. I would like you to reflect on the following in your journal entries.

1. How does what you have learned about the broad flow of European history change your perspective on your own history?

2. In your visits to the two museums and your London tour what things have stood out to you and caused you to ask questions about history?

3. What question is driving you to consider writing on a certain topic?

4. Give your general thoughts on what you are learning.

For your journal entries I need you to think of them like an end of the week paper or assignment. Don’t make this like a regular blog post.
That is why I want you to write them in your word processor program first and then cut and paste them into the blog.

There were 4 questions so please make your entry conform to that format.
Write them in direct answer to the sections.

Use references in Parenthesis like (British Museum) where you have a source.
Remember you were given things to look at that you could talk about in your journal.
